Gujjar buffalo

Buffalo resting on the roadside on the Gujjar’s semi-annual trek from the Himalayan highlands to Dehradun. In September, part of a group of the Gujjar semi-nomadic tribe is on the move for a month from the high mountainous pastures of Uttarakashi to Dehradun river valley outside the state capital of Uttarakhand, in northern India. At 3:00 a.m., this family was one of 10 moving their buffaloes and cattle about 60 km, from the hill station Dhanaulti to Suakholi, where they will camp for the night. This buffalo cow appears to be of the Nili-Ravi breed (or perhaps the Murrah breed). the Nili-Ravi are a milk-type found mainly in Pakistan. Black in colour, they have a wedge shape, massive frame, small curly horns, and can have wall eyes (milky or glazed). They often have white markings on the forehead, face, muzzle and legs and a white switch of tail. They have a large, strong udder and are generally docile (photo credit ILRI/MacMillan).
